The Uric Acid Problem
When a dog urinates on artificial turf, it soaks through the fibres into the infill below. As it dries, it forms uric acid crystals, hard, insoluble compounds that bond to the infill and backing, and those crystals are the actual source of the ammonia smell. Water dilutes them temporarily, vinegar neutralises surface pH briefly, and fragranced sprays just sit on top, none of it breaks the crystal structure down. In Perth's summer heat the crystals off-gas ammonia again, which is why the smell always comes back worse in January.
